Anorexia Nervosa (Self starvation) and Bulimia (forced vomiting or purging) are excessive eating disorders.  In high school one of my close friends suffered from both anorexia and bulimia.  Even when all she carried on her 5 foot 1 inch body was 54 pounds, she was totally convinced that she was fat.

Not much is known about this condition.  Many health professionals believe contributors are:

  • Need for control in one's life
  • Need to please others
  • Dread of being fat.
  • Depression
  • Low self esteem
  • Unresolved abuse as a child
  • Social attitude toward peer pressure and toward thinness
  • From the book FEELINGS BURIED ALIVE NEVER DIE the emotions listed are:
    • Feels totally unable to please parent (usually mother)
    • Feels unable to live up to expectations of others
    • Feelings of self-rejection/self-hatred

There is also an indication that a mineral deficiency (including Zinc) may be the cause.

Some suspect that it is a manifestation of a type of OCD (Obsessive Compulsion Disorder). This is how I usually work with it and so far there has been great results.  If the person is willing to take the herbs.

I think my friend's battle began after some boys started commenting on her developing curves.  She tried first to cover her shape with baggy clothes then she started the weight loss.

Wearing baggy clothes it seems is a common first sign of Anorexia or Bulimia others include:

  • Weightloss
  • Being occupied with counting calories
  • Constipation
  • Dry and sallow skin
  • Going to be alone (especially to the bathroom) shortly after a meal
  • Cessation of menses (periods)
  • Loss of some hair on head and could cause increase of body and facial hair
  • Fear of being fat even when very thin
  • Cold hands and feet at normal room temperatures
  • Loss of sexual desire
  • Excessive exercising
  • Energy can increase or decrease from the norm

Most people say that anorexia is a pure emotional disorder.  I say that emotional and physical conditions usually feed off each other.  Although counseling is important, diet and supplementation should not be overlooked.

Some believe that licorice root is the answer because they believe that anorexia is caused by a blood sugar imbalance.

A homeopathic  that may be helpful is  VIGOR/VITALITY which helps improve appetite.

Tahitian Noni is also been found useful.

My friend was extremely fortunate and did finally overcome the symptoms of anorexia and is at a sensible weight.  It was a hard battle and she said that she will always have to fight it.

No one knows for sure what to do for this disorder.   Most agree, though, that forcing, reasoning and commenting on the condition only seems to make it worse.  After all, if the fear of dying isn't a deterrent for them, how could anything be?

I personally, would nutritionally support the nervous system with Chinese Stress Relief and  Spirulina and Flaxseed oil.  I would also encourage minerals especially Mineral chi  because mineral deficiencies may have been the root cause but which will also help balance the electrolytes which helps with heart function.  Then I would find a GOOD counselor who specializes in this condition.

The focus of this site is to "educate, validate, and suggest alternative methods for the treatment of health conditions," which are not readily available to those who go through mainstream programs.
