GALLSTONES, GALLBLADDER HEALTH

The other day I received a request to write a little about gallbladder problems.  This is a subject that I might never have covered because I had no idea that it was so prevalent.  The statistics show that 1 out of 8 men and 1 out of 4 women will have gall stones or gallbladder problems before they reach the age of 60 years.

The gallbladder is a small pear shaped organ that is attached to the underside of the liver, located in the upper right abdomen just under the ribs.  Its function is to store and concentrate bile which is produce by the liver and is necessary for the proper digestion of fats.  When you eat, the gallbladder is stimulated to contract emptying the digestive bile into the small intestine.  It is, therefore, important to avoid going long periods without eating so that the juices in the gallbladder don't cause disease.

The bile salts are made up of mostly solids suspended in a sodium solution.  If the body needs organic sodium to, to help alkalize the body, it will draw from the gallbladder's reserve.  This can cause the solids to form stones.  Removal of the gallbladder also shuts off the body's warehouse of organic sodium, which a deficiency can lead to arthritis and weakened digestive system.

What you consume is also an important consideration.  Too much meat, fats, or greasy food puts more of a demand on the gallbladder.  A Vitamin D deficiency or a magnesium deficiency or inorganic calcium such as milk or cheap synthetic calcium supplements (such as Tums) can promote calcium stones to form.  Some stones are formed because of too much uric acid in the system.

Possible symptoms of a less than healthy gallbladder are: yellow discoloration of the skin, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, constant nausea, sensitivity to greasy foods, cabbage, cauliflower, or sharp pains between the shoulder blades.

If you suspect that you are having a gallbladder attack, I strongly suggest that you consult a physician, because it could be diseased or might turn gangrenous.  Some advanced doctors remove the stones and try to keep the organ intact, others give the impression that the gallbladder is unnecessary.  I disagree.  Although, you can live without a gallbladder, my research indicates that your digestion will never be the same.  I believe that if this organ wasn't necessary it wouldn't have been there in the first place.

If you have had your gallbladder removed and a sharp pain persists contact a doctor.  Removal didn't correct the reason the body was developing stones.  Those stones can still form, but will more than likely end up in the liver, pancreas or in the stump of the cystic duct.

There have been a lot of people who have avoided an operation by flushing stones out of their gallbladder using the gallbladder/liver flush.

Herbs and herbal combos which have been used historically to improve the health of or discourage the formation of stones in the gallbladder are:
Herb or Combo Reason for Suggestion
Safflowers   Uric acid stones
Hydrangea Helps prevent gravel from forming
Cascara Sagrada/LBS II   Helps discharge small gallstones
Gall Bladder Formula (Gallbladder Fromula (BLG-X)) Bowel, Liver and Gallbladder combo
Marshmallow with Hydrangea to help soothe an inflamed gallbladder

It astounds me that 12.5% to 25% of us will develop gall disease or stones.  I'm really grateful for the suggestion to cover this subject.  Thanks Judy!
